The 2015 budget proposed by President Barack Obama will make it more difficult for Democrats to find common ground with Republicans, said House Budget Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan.
"He went further to the left," the Wisconsin Republican told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Wednesday. "He never proposed to ever balance the budget. That really isn't an attempt to bridge the gap and find common ground."
Ryan said last year President Obama proposed provisions "that made it look like he wanted to bridge the gap and come together." He said the current budget plan reflects a desire to "raise taxes, so that Washington can spend more."
The differences were wide between the president, who Ryan said was interested in spending increases, and Republicans, who wanted to "balance the budget and pay off the debt."
"We think the days of increasing taxes ought to be over, because we need to grow this economy. He's raised taxes $1.7 trillion. And now he wants to raise it another $1.8 trillion," he said.
Ryan said the government continued to fund programs, such as Medicaid, that weren't working. He said it was important to fix programs so that they "actually deliver" on their mission.
"That's my problem with the status quo. It isn't working, and we need to talk about ideas to fix it," he said.
